August 27th, 2009

As most of us Google users know, as Google scours the Internet indexing web pages and ranking them for our benefit, they also cache the page at points in time. You see this option whenever you look at a result in a Google search, and shown in the picture below (see red underline).

RoboForm & RoboForm2Go Product Review

August 24th, 2009

I’ve been using RoboForm and RoboForm2Go for nearly 2 years now to manage all of my online passwords. In a nutshell, it protects my vast array of online passwords (as of this writing, I have just shy of 90) in an encrypted manor with one master password. I have I’ve found one of the easiest products to use because it not only sites down near my Windows clock, but also attaches to both Internet Explorer and Mozilla Firefox as toolbars.

Creating Hyperlinks in Word and Excel Longer than 256 Characters

August 20th, 2009

I recently came across an issue where I need to create a hyperlink in Microsoft Word 2003 that was roughly 300 characters long. Unfortunately, it appears that Microsoft had put some odd restriction in place on the maximum length of a hyperlink and it seemed I was out of luck. After a few minutes of googling turned up nothing, I was forced to find my own solution.

Problems using the Notepad++ FTP_Synchronize Plugin with Vista

June 13th, 2009

I was excited to find out recently that Notepad++ has a plug-in that will allow you to edit files on an FTP server. The plug-in, which has come with Notepad++ since v4.7, is FTP_Synchronize. Unfortunately, although I’m on Notepad++ 5.2, the plug-in did not work out of the box for me. While I could connect to and browse my FTP server, any attempt to download a file resulted in the error “Unable to create directory for file C”.

This is useful in corporate environments where you don’t want it to have a generic name when you’re being told someone else has your file open.

I’ve been having a problem with using the WordPress wp-syntax plugin to highlight my AutoIt code. In a nutshell, it would dump the span tags right onto the page instead of actually styling any of the code.

Online Data Backup Solution Mozy

March 16th, 2009

No matter how often we (the technicians and engineers) shake our heads at our end users or customers who haven’t backed up their most critical data before the hard disk crash, stolen device, or mistaken deletion, I would venture to guess that we’re just as lazy as they are. And what’s worse, is that we should know better; we know how easy it is for hardware to fail without warning, or the new virus to wipe the system without prejudice. Hey, I’m no better – up until not too long ago, my personal laptop backup strategy was emailing critical files to myself and letting them sit in my online inbox. (Hey, it’s free, right?)
