Online Data Backup Solution Mozy

No matter how often we (the technicians and engineers) shake our heads at our end users or customers who haven’t backed up their most critical data before the hard disk crash, stolen device, or mistaken deletion, I would venture to guess that we’re just as lazy as they are. And what’s worse, is that we should know better; we know how easy it is for hardware to fail without warning, or the new virus to wipe the system without prejudice. Hey, I’m no better – up until not too long ago, my personal laptop backup strategy was emailing critical files to myself and letting them sit in my online inbox. (Hey, it’s free, right?)

Enter Mozy Home. I signed up with Mozy back in April 2008 when I was searching for a way to share files with my friends and co-workers easily. While Mozy didn’t offer itself as a solution for that problem, I got sidetracked looking into it and reading reviews, and it wasn’t long until I signed up for a free account.

Mozy promised free, automated, personal file backup for up to 2 GB of data without even asking for a credit card. While unlimited may seem a bit too good to be true, I suspect that their implementing data deduplication, perhaps even at the block level.

Home users needing more than 2 GB of backup space can sign up for Mozy Home’s unlimited backup plan, currently priced at $4.95/mo.

I’ve been a happy Mozy (free) customer since then. The software allows me to configure a backup schedule (I select daily), pick my folders, and then “set it and forget it”. Every day, without prompting or prompts, my data is backed up to Mozy’s data centers, allowing me to continue to be lazy about data backup.

If you enjoyed this article or it helped you in any way, I’d appreciate it if you’d post a comment below to let me know. All code examples are for demonstration only and should be used at your own risk. I cannot accept liability for unexpected results.
